tldr; My Mold Detox
My Symptoms
Acne (face, scalp, etc.)
Diagnosed Hidradenitis Suppurativa
Red patches of skin
Flushing
Waking up thinking I was choking or swallowing my mouthguard
Sleep anxiety
Brain fog
A touch of ADD
Around the age of thirteen, acne became a significant issue for me. It spread beyond my face, covering my back and scalp with nodules and cysts. Acutane was the only effective treatment, but its effects were short-lived, lasting only a few months after discontinuation.
I sought medical attention from various specialists, including Vanderbilt, Bowman Gray Dermatology at Wake Forest, and most recently, The Ultra Wellness Center. Unfortunately, these visits were largely ineffective.
Later in life, I was diagnosed with Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS), which required monthly injections or drainage of affected areas. The constant reminders of the lack of a cure were disheartening.
Eventually, I was diagnosed with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), which heightened my sensitivity to histamines. I was hospitalized twice due to severe reactions to histamines.
A urine mold test yielded a negative result, but a few years later, my wife informed me that alternative mold tests may provide more accurate results. Sure enough, my subsequent test revealed a positive response to five out of five molds tested for.
Despite the positive mold test results, doctors continued to dismiss them, citing the perceived ineffectiveness of urine mold tests. This dismissal highlights the tendency of doctors to overlook alternative approaches that don’t involve medication.
Below is a detailed account of my accelerated detoxification from mold.
My Mold Protocol
It’s a good idea to start with a baseline test
RealTime Labs Mycotoxin panel. After you start taking a binder, the levels of mold reported on the test go up. It is important to stop all binders three days prior to your urine sample. I was not able to, but it is highly recommended. My mold count was likely several times higher because I could not stop the binders (trying to prevent my skin from breaking out any worse than it was already).
Starting in 2025, I was able to stop my binders three full days prior to my test. I was instructed to work up a sweat each of these days. Get active. Not required, but highly recommended. I would take my last binders on Thursday. Friday, Saturday and Sunday would be binder free, and I would take the test Monday morning and send it off a few hours later.
I did this for the first two months daily
Zeoboost (supplement)
I mixed six teaspoons in twelve ounces of water, three times daily. One hour before a meal or two hours after a meal.
Zeoboost removed Aflatoxin and Zearalenone.
I did this during months three and four daily
Cholestyramine Compounded (no flavoring, prescription)
One scoop in the morning and one scoop in the afternoon. Brush your teeth immediately after taking.
I had the orange-flavored version first, and it worked for everything but Ochratoxin A. My symptoms were aggravated by the Citric Acid in the flavoring. Synthetic citric acid is made from mold, so I learned to avoid Citric Acid. I had to skip the flavoring and tough it out with the plain compounded version.
Cholestyramine removed the remaining Ochratoxin, Gliotoxin, and Trichothecene. It would have removed all five, but unfortunately, it is typically seen as a last resort.
If I had it to do over?
I would go straight to Cholestyramine Compounded (no flavoring, prescription).
What Didn’t Work
I took the following supplments for approximately fifteen months with minor improvement.
Mediclay
Takeasumi (activated charcoal)
GI Detox
Chlorella
Meditation (not a supplement, but it didn’t cure my mold problem)
